Increasingly, society is clear about the important role that science plays in our daily lives, many citizens are beginning to show interest in participating or collaborating with science. The movement that promotes open science, and specifically those that promote citizen science, provide innumerable possibilities for bringing science closer to society.

Many citizens are intimidated by science, because they believe or consider that to collaborate in the generation of knowledge very complex knowledge is required. But the reality is not as complex as some may think, it just requires motivation and the desire to be part of this idea. The MammalNet project aims to encourage citizen participation by motivating them to gather information on the distribution of mammals. Different applications are offered that facilitate the collection of this information, and that become tools with a great educational potential for teachers or educators, for researchers who work with camera traps and for all those citizens who want to empower themselves in science.

Thanks to the Internet and new technologies allow access to a large and diverse public that can take advantage of this opportunity to cover some of their needs to know and learn. We offer a free online course that is divided into modules that allow students to complete all or some of the modules.

Empowering participants to:

  • Understand the advantages of open science for the advancement of science and society and how they can be an active part of this movement.
  • Understand the importance of improving knowledge of mammal distribution to encourage biodiversity conservation and make management decisions based on scientific evidence.
  • Understand the potential sources of data and approaches that can improve knowledge of mammal distribution.
  • Know the possibilities offered by the different tools available in the MammalNet project, to collect occasional records or using camera trial devices.
  • Know some of the projects and active platforms that are currently involved in the conservation of European mammals

The online course is structured in 4 different modules that address different approaches.

– On-line training: All the contents will be available through the Virtual Campus in the form of short videos. Once registered, the participant can choose to watch the videos, and do the final tests, when he/she has time

– On-line questionnaires: On-line questionnaires will be made with theoretical and practical questions.
